Book Review: Cole Family ChristmasOne of my favorites lessons to teach with my 8th grade Lanuage Arts students is a unit on oral history when the have the opportunity to interview famly members, capturing both family hetitage and tradition. After reading Cole Family Christmas for the first time, I was reminded of the value of this unit as the book's orgins are deeply routed the oral history of one family's unique Christmas experience. "Cole Family Christmas is a delightful story about a coal-mining family of eleven in the Appalachian Mountains who learns that love and togetherness far surpass material things" written by Hazel Cole Kendle and her gradedaughter-in-law Jennifer Liu Bryan. Reading it aloud with your children or grandchild, the story of one Cole Family Christmas will become a family tradition in itself.

well we make cookies or fudge for the neighbors and friends...but we always make homemade ormanents for the tree.
Thank you for a great giveaway.
Every Christmas Eve my family like to drive around the neighborhoods near where we live and look at all the holiday decorations and displays people have at their homes. We love to have a contest and name the best house, the worst house, the tackiest house and so forth. The kids look forward to this each and every year.
My kids also love to make gifts for their grandparents, Godparents and great-grandfather. They also enjoy going to the Dollar Store with some $$$ and buying gifts for everyone too. It's sweet to see what they pick out for someone and find out the reasons why. Like one year my son bought a mug for Grandpa because Grandpa likes coffee and he likes dogs (it had a cartoon dog on it). Sweet things like that.
Thank you for the giveaway.

We always decorate the Christmas tree w/ the ornaments I've collected all my life (and now the girls are starting their own collections as well), I love the fun of putting them on in no particular order, the "hodge podge" look of it all . . . and all the memories that are tied in w/ our tree. And the girls love hearing the stories behind some of the ornaments as we hang them.
We are German so we have St. Nicholas day and the 6th we put the christmas list in a shoe on the window seal and Santa comes and gets the list and fills it with little toys and candies :)

Each year we make homemade nativity scenes: painted sculptures, sewn, drawn, baked, etc. Last year my niece and nephew came, and we made an edible gingerbread nativity. As we decorated the cookies, we told the nativity story. Our 2-yr old nephew was rapt. :)

My kids are young, so we are just getting started on our own traditions. One we started last year is watching all the holiday specials (Charlie Brown, Rudolph, etc) together and eating popcorn.
